What Is Business?
Business is a call to serve. If you are in business, you are in service. Believe it or not, you are serving others. Thus, it is a worthwhile venture.
Without a heart for service, you cannot make it in business. Business is strategically created by God for the services to man.
Yinkas A. A. Adebajo, in his writing, noted, “If you want to be great, you must first be the servant of all. You must not wait to be served but to serve and serve your nation with all your heart”.
Myles Munroe said it right when he uttered that true leaders transcend private comforts to comfort others.
“Whoever wants to become great among you, must be your servant and whoever wants to be first must be slave of all. For even the son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life as a ransom for many”. The Bible observed.
Many people do not seem to understand that to be a business man is to serve others.
Businesses must satisfy their customers if they are to survive. Service is a necessary facility (a pre-requisite) of profit.
As a Businessman or woman, you create goods and services for others. For every product that sustains and improves human lives is made possible by the world’s creators (Entrepreneurs), through the great Creator (God). Business is thus a noble calling.
Sunday Adelaja, in his book, “Declaring War On Poverty” (2008:27), supported this when he wrote,
“…Christians should not work for money. Every Christian should go to work with one goal and purpose, to bring the kingdom of God into the sphere where he/she is working. Our thoughts should be, ‘I am going to work, because God is sending me there. I am His ambassador.’ If we are working because we must survive, then our motivation is money. It means money controls our actions. It rules over us.
God gave you a place of work so that His will be done. I do not care how I am treated, or what others think about me, I go to work on behalf of God. Work for me is service to God; it is a way of establishing His kingdom on earth. I do not work for money- I serve God. Of course, I want to have a decent salary, but that is not my primary goal. If I were motivated by money, then I would serve money, not the Lord. Instead, I want to be an example to my co-workers – and then God will provide everything necessary in life. If your motivation is different, then you need to change. All work should be service to God, and money only a by-product of such services”.
Evidences Of A Calling
Caleb McAfee, in his book, “Start Your Own Business” itemized the following as the evidence of a calling:
You have an unshakable inner sense that God has called you into business.
You have an inner dissatisfaction about being an employee.
You experience frustration when your ideas are ignored or if someone else takes credit for them.
You have a general dissatisfaction about your job and an uneasy feeling that your future is in someone else’s hands.
You are convinced you can be a more effective servant of the Lord by being in business for yourself.
However, there are Potential Rewards that accrue to you when you locate and stick to your calling as a businessman. Thus:
If you are willing to pay the price, the potential can be enormous. It follows the law of cause and effect.
If you want to climb into the higher realms of income, usually there must first be some internal adjustments. You must believe the pathway is open to you, and believe there are no barriers such as heredity, race, or class restrictions.
You must have an attitude of cheerful expectancy. You must come to the knowledge that success will be yours. You will be leaving the paths of others who are content with the status quo to climb into the more rarefied realms of achievement and wealth. It will take time: it won’t happen overnight.
But think of it this way, the time will pass anyway, whether or not you pursue outstanding achievement. Thus, stop thinking limiting thoughts! You are always moving in the direction of your dominant thoughts. You will ultimately become what you think about. Therefore, you must stop thinking in ordinary ways.
Ask yourself, “How can I provide enough service so that my rewards will add up to the financial goals God has put in my heart?”
The cutting away from the status-quo has to begin in the mind and from the mind, find expression in the attitude. Many people are not willing to invest the hours and expend the energy it takes to successfully grow a business.
A sluggard does not plant in season: so at harvest time he looks but finds nothing. Proverb 20:4.
BUSINESS IS A PROBLEM-SOLVING TOOL
It is the problems you solve that determine your status in the business world.
Business is the art and science of solving problems and challenges in an environment. Until you are a problem-solver, you are not in business.
Focusing on the money you will make through a business idea is failing before even starting. Business must solve part of the hydra-headed problems and challenges of man to be seen as one.
The extent of the problem you solve is the only guarantee for your promotion in life.
The world today is full of challenges and problems. The truth is that these seemingly hydra-headed challenges and problems are the real money-makers.
You can make all the money you desire to make when you discover a challenge or problem that is in alignment with your destiny and solve it.
If God called you to be a musician, there are many problems you can use songs to solve. Sing songs that will stop the operations of terrorism, prostitution, armed-robbery, and other social menace. Use you songs to correct the excesses of some people of the world.
If you are called to write, just like me, locate some human problems that are in alignment with your assignment on earth and write against it, proffering solutions for a dynamic change.
For example, God called me to teach the business people “Vision”. He sent me to inform all business people, real and intending business people, that any business that is not anchored on Him (God) will amount to total failure.
That is why most of my book titles are related to business. Examples include: “Secrets Of Business Breakthrough”, “Business At Ease”, “How To Make It In Naija”, “The Money Code Audio-Visual Lecture Series”, “Money In The 21st Century” “The Study At Ease Project” etc.
Who are you? What is your assignment on earth? Where are you called to serve? How are you going to go about the assignment? If you can comfortably answer these basic four questions, then you have discovered your purpose.
But, beyond these, what problems and challenges have you discovered around you? How does the people around you relate? What are their conditions of life? Are they poor or rich? What attitudes do they possess and portray?
All these seemingly hydra-headed challenges and problems are opportunities for your supernatural breakthrough. Do you know that you can really make money out of these challenges and problems?
God told me few days to the official launching of my weekly seminars in Africa that He does not empower personal needs but He empowers visions.
Until you get determined to solve practical problems, God might not empower you financially. Thus, you do not start a business because you acquired skills or trainings in that business but because you have discovered a seemingly challenge that aligns with your destiny that you want to solve. That is what guarantees the release of finances from the throne of grace. If you doubt me, ask Jonah, when you meet him, who paid his fare to Tarshish? He paid the fare! (Jonah 1:3)
But Jonah rose up to flee unto Tarshish from the presence of the Lord, and went down to Joppa; and he found a ship going to Tarshish; so HE PAID the fare thereof,…(Emphasis mine)
Stop searching for a non-existent job! Create work for yourself and your work will in turn create wealth. That is what business is all about!
As part of the concluding part of this write-up, I shall be publishing another article within this period to further reveal to you more practical steps to take in the forth-coming year so as to emerge a giant in the midst of dwarfs.
